The “party” at the Democratic Party convention last week was palpable even via TV. The DJ-fueled roll call? Positively lit. Then there were the chants of “USA!”, the constant reminders that our freedoms are at stake, and the Republicans.

Yes, the Republicans. Prominent members of the GOP and Trump’s staff spoke in prime time each night to deliver one key message: Trump’s party no longer represents core Republican values. “The Republican Party is no longer conservative,” former GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger told the crowd. “It has switched its allegiance from the principles that gave it purpose, to a man whose only purpose is himself.”

Former Trump national security official Olivia Troye recalled how Trump “undermined the democratic process. Now he’s doing it again.” So she’s voting for Kamala, “not because we agree on every issue. But because we agree on the most important issue: protecting our freedoms.” Troye urged Republicans watching at home to do the same. “You aren’t voting for a Democrat, you’re voting for democracy.”

Former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham echoed that message. “I’m standing here advocating for a Democrat because I love my country more than my party.”

It’s not unprecedented for party conventions to feature politicians who have switched camps. But the parade at the Democratic convention was telling, especially if you consider the other Republican leaders who snubbed the GOP convention:

  • No living GOP ex-president, vice president or nominee even attended the Trump show this year. Not George W., Dick Cheney, Mitt Romney, or Paul Ryan. Not even Melania spoke. (Obama, the Clintons and Biden spoke at the Dems’.)
  • More telling, about half of Trump’s revolving door of cabinet secretaries don’t even support him now
  • Friday, a dozen Republican White House lawyers from several administrations endorsed Harris, writing pointedly that Trump “would threaten American democracy.”
  • And Monday, more than 200 former staffers for G. W. Bush, McCain, and Romney followed suitexplaining that “the dangerous goals of Project 2025 will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions.”

For love of country, vote for the moderate

More and more, Republicans are realizing there is only one sensible, moderate choice in November. “Our party is not civil or conservative. It’s chaotic and crazy,” proclaimed former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, a Republican, at the Democratic convention. “The only thing left to do is dump Trump.”

Local Republican candidate takes a page from disinformation handbook

Last week State Representative Rachel Khanna (D-149) pointedly called out her newcomer opponent in the state House race for spreading lies about Khanna’s legislative record. “The use of the word ‘lies’ is not campaign hyperbole or political rhetoric,” Khanna explains. “When I vote YES on a bill and my opponent claims that I voted NO – that’s a lie.

Khanna identified falsehoods her opponent printed and distributed in a campaign flyerHere are the facts:

  • Rachel Khanna voted YES on a bill that improves reporting of juvenile criminal records in a firearms background check database. Her opponent falsely claims she voted NO and prevented “police from fingerprinting violent criminals.” Her opponent is lying. Khanna’s opponent asserts that police cannot currently fingerprint juveniles accused of violent crimes. This too is false.
  • Rachel Khanna voted YES on a bill to strengthen protections against domestic violence. Her opponent claimed Rachel voted NO. Her opponent lied.

These misstatements and numerous other lies come from a candidate who launched a campaign promising to “restore civility” and end “extreme divisiveness” in politics.
