The Independent Party of CT is throwing its support behind incumbent State Rep. Rachel Khanna and state Senate challenger Nick Simmons in the November election. The candidates will appear on both the Democratic and Independent ballot lines. The Independent Party represents people who “think for themselves and wish to advance the welfare and well-being of Connecticut residents through common sense governance.”

“I am deeply honored to be the first Democrat in the history of Senate District 36 to receive a cross endorsement from the Connecticut Independent Party,” Simmons said. “This endorsement underlines our shared dedication to bipartisan leadership, fiscal responsibility, and a more prosperous future. I look forward to finding common ground in the state Senate while advocating on behalf of all residents, regardless of party.”

Rachel Khanna received the Independent Party’s endorsement for a second time. “We share a common commitment to fiscal responsibility and working to create an economically vibrant Connecticut, where all have the opportunity to thrive.” she said. “This endorsement reflects my accomplishments over the past two years and continued commitment to representing all residents in the district across parties.”

Freedom of Information?

As Americans, we pride ourselves on being able to see how the government sausage is made, from town board meetings, to federal agencies. This transparency is bolstered by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which lets anyone request access to most government documents. It helps us keep our officials accountable. Thanks to FOIA, journalists and citizens have uncovered instances of government corruption and wrongdoing.

But in June, First Selectman Fred Camillo announced that Greenwich residents were enjoying too much freedom with their public record requests, and began publicizing what had been requested and by whom. This is nothing but a name and shame effort, aimed at chilling your right to watch over your government. Last week, Fred characterized some of them as “partisan political requests” and a “waste of employee time and taxpayer money.” Moreover, reporting in The Greenwich Time made clear that not all FOIA requests are being included in Fred’s airing of grievances.

In the interest of transparency, we would like to know more about how Fred determines which requests are “partisan political” ones, and why that should matter. Are they just ones that raise questions about his conduct? Maybe someone should FOIA that. Any citizen should be able to make a legitimate FOIA request of their town’s public records without intimidation.
