The big, bad budget bill

As Democrats, we share a simple principle: Government should work for everyone. That means standing up for working families, not stacking the deck for billionaires. The Republican budget bill passed last week is a betrayal of that idea, and a stark reminder of why we fight.

In the dead of night, by a single vote, House Republicans passed one of the most destructive budget bills in recent memory last week, 215 to 214. Why the secrecy? Because the contents are too ugly to withstand daylight. It is a sweeping attack on working families, seniors, students, and anyone who relies on a shot at opportunity or a safety net in tough times. Meanwhile, billionaire friends of the president get another windfall.

Medicaid cuts: Over 7 million low-income families, seniors in nursing homes, and people with disabilities risk losing health care coverage

Food assistance cuts (SNAP): Millions of Americans, primarily vulnerable children, veterans, and families could go hungry

Education cuts: Changes to college loan programs would put higher education even more out of reach for low and middle-income families

Reproductive health care cuts: Two hundred Planned Parenthood centers would be shuttered, leaving countless patients without reproductive care or cancer screenings

Clean energy job losses: Slashing tax incentives for this growth industry would set us back decades and imperil the manufacturing jobs they created.

Bottom line: this bill showers billionaires with trillions in tax breaks, while slashing vital programs helping ordinary Americans. And the kicker? It adds trillions to our national debt. Where’s the fiscal responsibility?

Candidate Trump repeatedly said he wouldn’t touch Medicaid; another promise broken. But it doesn’t stop there. The ballooning deficit created by this bill sets the stage for billions in Medicare cuts as early as next year, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, putting millions of seniors at risk of losing their health care too.

“This bill will devastate millions of Americans, including thousands of Connecticut families,” said Governor Ned Lamont, noting the bill will “push costs on to the backs of the states and middle class families.”

“It’s reverse Robin Hood,” said Congressman Jim Himes. “Stealing from people who are needy in order to deliver value to the very wealthiest people in this country.”

This bill is your wake-up call and also a call to take action. Democrats at every level are standing up for working families, seniors, students, and our planet. While Republicans push cruel cuts to finance tax handouts for billionaires, Democrats are leading the charge to protect health care, invest in education, fight hunger, and tackle climate change.

The funding bill goes to the GOP-controlled Senate next, with a vote likely by early July. “It’s an absolute disaster,” proclaimed Senator Chris Murphy. “We’re going to mobilize all across the country to try to stop final passage of this legislation.”

In June we celebrate the best of who we are

June is more than just the gateway to summer. It’s a series of celebrations highlighting the values that make America strong, compassionate, and free.

Pride Month and Juneteenth remind us of our ongoing journey toward a more perfect union. Pride honors love, dignity, equality, and the fight for acceptance and justice while Juneteenth marks the end of slavery, echoing our founding promise that all are created equal. Both call on us to continue to fight for and uphold freedom and equality for everyone.

We also observe Immigrant Heritage Month, celebrating the grit, hope, and dreams of those who came to America seeking a better life. From culture and cuisine to science, sports, and innovation, immigrants have shaped every corner of our nation and made it stronger, building it into the great nation it is today.

Father’s Day gives us a chance to give heartfelt thanks to all the dads, grandads, stepdads, and father figures who make a lasting difference in the lives of families and communities. And June is the month of graduations, a milestone we’ll always remember.

And finally, National Donut Day. Because in America, we believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of the inalienable right to eat dessert for breakfast!

A new Save the Sound report finds that all four Greenwich beaches received lower water quality grades this year—an alarming sign tied directly to the town’s failure to maintain and invest in its aging sewer infrastructure. The report warns that high levels of Enterococci bacteria, a key indicator of fecal contamination, are putting public health at risk and forcing beach closures. “Proactive maintenance and timely repair of these critical infrastructure components not only reward you with clean water and help keep your beaches open—they save you money in local taxes,” the report states. This kind of basic neglect is what happens after decades of one-party rule in Greenwich—a legacy of stagnation, complacency, and lack of long-term vision when it comes to planning and public health.
