We condemn in the strongest possible terms the escalating violence in Minneapolis, and in cities across this country, involving masked and heavily armed federal agents. The deployment of thousands of immigration agents, including ICE and Border Patrol personnel, has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation in communities and raises profound concerns about civil rights, accountability, and public safety. This is not a partisan issue; we should all be alarmed.
This weekend, federal agents shot and killed a Minneapolis man, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and US citizen. Just a few weeks ago, Renee Good — a 37-year-old mother, poet, and US citizen — also was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. These tragic events underscore a pattern of federal actions marked by a sense of impunity and indifference.
Connecticut leaders are speaking out. Governor Ned Lamont stated, “The disturbing footage coming out of another fatal federal enforcement incident in Minneapolis reminds, yet again, how abuses of power do nothing to make our communities safer.”
“I am sick to my stomach at what appears to be another cold-blooded murder of an American citizen at the hand of ICE agents, and the immediate lies being spun in response by this administration,” said Congressman Jim Himes. “We are watching the relentless escalation of violence by a lawless authoritarian regime…History will be unforgiving to those who capitulate to this immoral criminal administration.”
Greenwich Selectwoman Rachel Khanna said she’s “horrified that this violence against innocent people, and the undermining of constitutional rights, is being justified and condoned by the current administration.”
US Senator Richard Blumenthal called the violence “heartbreaking and outrageous” and placed blame on President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for “fostering a culture of illegal brutality.”
This week, the US Senate is set to vote on funding for the Department of Homeland Security, including resources for ICE. Given the mounting evidence of harm to American citizens and communities under current enforcement, every senator should demonstrate a commitment to public safety and vote NO.
We will not be silent. We believe in an America where communities are safe, rights are protected, and justice is not selective.
