Greenwich Democratic Town Committee Responds to RTC and First Selectman’s Claims Regarding Political Signage in Town

GREENWICH, CT – Oct. 14, 2024 – Greenwich Democratic Town Committee (GDTC) Chair Christina Downey released the following statement in response to the Greenwich Republican Town Committee and First Selectman Fred Camillo’s claims regarding political signage in town:

“Early voting begins in Connecticut in just seven days. The Democratic Town Committee placed its signs out merely one week before the start of early voting, in accordance with the timeline of past agreements, when voting was done only at the polls on Election Day.”

“With so many critical issues at stake, we believe that helping to shine a light on the topics people most care about and helping to get out the vote, including through signs in public spaces, are significant tools in how we exercise our democratic rights, including the right to vote and to freedom of speech and expression. Our counterparts in the Republican Town Committee have been doing the same thing with their placement of oversized banners around town for weeks. The sign placement should come as no surprise because our committee communicated to the RTC that with early voting commencing on October 21, candidates would be putting signs out ‘as they deem appropriate.’”

“From protecting local zoning control, reproductive freedom and the environment, bringing back dollars from Hartford to fix our schools, and so much more, we have no time to lose in getting the word out about what may be the most important election of our lives. If our town’s Republican leadership prefers to argue about signs rather than on the issues that actually matter, that’s well within their right, but we believe much more is on the line.”
