VP brings energy and experience to campaign
Are you feeling it? Just hours after President Biden stood down and threw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, elected officials, convention delegates, donors large and small, and potential rivals followed suit.
A record-breaking $81 million was donated to the Harris campaign in a single day.
“This moment presents a renewed sense of hope for Americans who are eager to rally around a candidate who represents all Americans, and is committed to protecting and preserving our democracy,” said Greenwich party chair Christina Downey.
The contrast between Harris and the Republican nominee couldn’t be more striking
- Kamala led the second largest justice agency in the nation, and prosecuted sex predators. The other guy was found liable for sexual abuse, convicted of faking business records to mask payments to a porn star, and faces 88 additional federal criminal charges.
- She is the administration’s leading voice defending reproductive rights. The other guy has gloated about overturning Roe v. Wade.
- She believes in equal justice under the law. The other guy believes he is above the law, and on January 6, 2021 demonstrated he’s willing to trample the Constitution.
- She champions initiatives to prevent gun violence. The other guy is in the pocket of the NRA.
- She prosecuted private universities that swindled Americans. The other guy ran a private university that swindled Americans.
- At 59, she is youthful and vigorous. At 78, the other guy is now the oldest candidate ever to run for president, and it shows.
- She offers Americans a vision of unity, opportunity, and hope. The other guy sows division and chaos, spins apocalyptic tales, and nurtures grievances.
This November the choice couldn’t be clearer. But it will not be a cakewalk. Harris is still an underdog, so we need every ounce of your active support, starting now. Please give your time, attention, and donate what you can.
Biden demonstrates what patriotism looks like
Biden will be remembered for extraordinary accomplishments during his presidency—the strongest post-pandemic economic recovery in the world, impressive job growth, massive infrastructure investments, the most impactful climate action in our nation’s history, passage of the first major gun safety law in nearly 30 years, and efforts to protect women’s rights and give students relief from crushing debt.
Now, he will also be remembered for his sacrifice, putting nation above self, knowing that our democracy’s future is on the line in this election.
Republicans on finance board deny funding for accessibility improvements, again.
After repeatedly throwing obstacles in the way of funding to make Greenwich Avenue accessible, you have to ask yourself, “what do the finance board Republicans have against people with disabilities?”
First they slashed $850,000 the Department of Public Works (DPW) had requested by almost half. Then they made release of the funding wait until five “conditions” were met. After DPW did that, they again denied the funding, suggesting that Greenwich does not have to comply with current federal standards.
A frustrated First Selectman, also a Republican, urged the members of the Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) to “do the right thing.” “Not only do we have to comply with federal law,” Fred Camillo reminded them, “but we also have a moral obligation to do this… . We love our town and don’t want to see it dragged through the mud with something that should be a layup.”
Every Democrat voted to release the funding, and every Republican voted to deny it. Because voters gave BET Republicans a slim majority last November, they enjoy a tie-breaking vote. And so, our town fails to provide residents accessible use of our main street, up to present-day standards. And here’s an irony: BET members have been invited to Greenwich Avenue next week to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the very law they’ve thumbed their noses at.
